I have an inserted date field in the footer of templates, which displays the current date when the template is merged. I need some way of changing the merged text so that when I save the RTF merged letter, the date stays as that of when it was merged - no longer the current date.
What is the best way to do this,

The best way would be to change the RTF writer to replace the field with name DATE to the respective text. This can be done in unit WPWrtRTF.

There've been a number of requests of this nature and whilst its possible to achieve the desired result by "hacking" your code I (and I guess many others) prefer not to.
As you continue to develop can you think about some sort of hook for us to build these types of things in please.

In WPTools 5 I plan to add a format string option for this. The current string is already stored in the "params" property of the text field object . That is also saved as "\fldrslt". But for WPTools 4 this is not planned.
